I think this is a sign of good things to come as it is widely believed "eggs embody the essence of life" and to find our first on the eve of a New Year gave me goosebumps, as well as hope!
Our girls or the hippy chicks, as hubby and I call them don't have a lighting system in their coop, so an egg in late December is rare for their breed. This morning we still only had that one lone egg sitting in the nest. Ponder this; Did you have anything happen that made you certain it was a positive sign for 2009?

K - maybe no actual sign, but a good and happy feeling counts... right?
Yes! We lost our dog on the 29th and found her in the pound on the 31st -- just in time for a happy 2009! :)
